Safety inspection team formed

BACOLOD City Mayor Evelio Leonardia has issued an order creating the Bacolod City Safety Inspection Team, a body that will conduct thorough technical evaluation of all public and private establishments in the locality.

Supported by a resolution coming from the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the move was made following the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last March 11.

he team is composed of the Office of the Building Official as chairman with members coming from the City Engineer’s Office; Bureau of Fire Protection-Bacolod; City Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Office and the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers.

The team is tasked to conduct technical evaluation and inspection of all public and private buildings in accordance with the Building and Fire Code of the Philippines; to recommend for the correction/installation of structural design within one year for the general safety of its occupants and the general public; and to recommend for the closure of an establishment when no corrections were made after the prescribed period.

Jose Maria Vargas, action officer and head of the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Office, said they will soon start inspecting public and private schools, hospitals and malls. “Earthquakes have no warnings and there is a need to prepare for that,” he said.

He also reported that they have already conducted 69 earthquake drills in public and private schools using the earthquake equipment given by Rep. Anthony Golez when he was still the administrator of the National Disaster Coordinating Council.

The equipment, worth P20 million, include a life locator, thermal scan and snake camera which can detect life or those trapped in collapsed buildings.
