Living By Your Word

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. (Psalms 119:9-11)

How can a young man keep his way pure? How can a middle aged man keep his way pure? How can an old man keep his way pure? How can a man keep his way pure all his life?

Last week, I read in the newspaper the moral failures of prominent people. These persons had money, power , influence, fame, position – everything that man desires to have. Yet having such things did not help in keeping them pure. Having these things did not keep their families spared from necessary pain because of wrong choices in life.

The Psalmist gives us his prescription so that we will be kept our way pure. I believe if a young man heeds to this wise counsel, then his life of purity will be experienced even as he navigates the stormy midlife years and sustains it till he is old and gray.

The wise counsel is for all of us to live according to God’s word. In what way can we practice “living according to His word?

The psalmist shares his practice of seeking God with all his heart. We should also do the same let us sincerely put God first in all that we do.

Another practice is to know the commands of the Lord and be committed to obey them. These commands are given by the Lord because it will protect us from harm.

The discipline of hiding God’s word in our heart is very important. We normally read God’s word for our devotions. Let us add to our discipline of studying, memorizing, and meditating God’s word. This is the only way we can hide God’s word in our hearts. We can avoid sin when we apply God’s word on a moment by moment basis. Let us hope and pray that our daily victory will translate to a pure life for the rest of our lives.
